Sustainable Cities Study Tour By Inspire Nation

Location: Barcelona, Spain
Date: November 2005
Client(s): Government Office for the North West
Study Highlights: City of BarcelonaSocial Services, Barcelona

Statistics show that in most UK cities, whilst overall wealth is increasing, the gap between rich and poor is growing wider. In Barcelona, however, whilst overall wealth has increased, deprivation has decreased. So how has this been achieved?

In November 2005, Inspire Nation will lead a delegation from the UK to meet with heads of Barcelona’s social services departments and city leaders to learn more about the innovative social programs the city has introduced to reduce poverty. Delegates will also meet with some of the independent and voluntary social agencies in Barcelona to discover the importance of their contribution, and how they collaborate with local authorities.

Barcelona has successfully overcome a number of social issues in order to reduce the gap between rich and poor. The Inspire Nation tour will look at a range of issues, including how Barcelona has tackled social exclusion amongst youths, and what innovative communication programs it has used to bring its burgeoning migrant community into the mainstream.

They will also learn how Barcelona’s regeneration investment has revitalized previously neglected areas, and the key role that public transport improvements and government tax incentives have played in this.

“Barcelona’s transformation is one of the most exemplary...because its guiding vision, it fuses contemporary aspirations with local traditions. It is a vision of civic life for the end of the twentieth century” Peter Buchanan
