ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Location: Saxony, Germany
Date: November 04
Client(s): Government Office for the North West
Study Highlights: Volkswagen, BioCity Leipzig, Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB)

This study tour looked at how the former East German state of Saxony is one of the fastest growing business locations in Germany , and how Saxony’s entrepreneurship policies are driving this success.

From microchips to aircraft recognition software, t he list of high-tech applications from Saxony is long - and the IT and telecommunications sectors in the Free State are correspondingly diverse. The silicon boom has given Dresden lowest unemployment rate of any city in the former East Germany.

Inspire Nation delegates met with officials in Leipzig and Dresden to find out how the Free State of Saxony supports business start-ups, what promotional programmes are in place to foster entrepreneurship , and how the region has attracted such a high proportion of female entrepreneurs (one-third of Saxon businesses are owned by women, compared to one-fifth in western Germany, according to the Federal Labour Bureau).

“…The way Silicon Saxony has put together the ingredients for an emerging high-tech cluster has important lessons for other European regions trying to establish themselves as centres of the new economy ." Alexander Bruehl, Atlas Venture
